Say Goodbye to Resentment
“Resentment is the poison you swallow hoping the other person will die.”
This graphic quote from actress Carrie Fisher, reminds us that we are hurting ourselves when we resent another person, and we are giving them control over our emotional state.
Want to loosen the grip of resentment and embrace forgiveness, here are some ideas…
- Gratitude Attitude – When you want to focus on the many ways that the world has wronged you flip that thought and name 3 things that you appreciate about your life. Allowing your self-image to be at the mercy of external circumstances is a shaky existence.
- Look for the Lesson – Why not re-frame life’s challenges as a test of your character. What are you being tested for: Patience? Compassion? Resilience? Open-mindedness?
- Learn the Lesson – Have a “student not victim mentality”. Commit to untangling from harmful situations and avoid similar situations in the future.
- Aim for Higher Ground – When you match hate with hate, anger with anger, bitterness with bitterness, you become part of the problem.
- Remember Perspective – This difficult event is part of your life, not your whole life. Keep it in context.
Albert Einstein said, “You can’t solve a problem by staying in the same energy in which it was created.” Smart man, good advice!
